Dispatch No. 42

Preserving the storefronts of 4th Avenue

When the old hardware shuttered last spring, the block lost a bit of its color. These images are an attempt to document the hand-painted signage and weathered wood frames before the renovators arrive with gray paint.

Working on analog film slows down the seeing. You wait for morning window light, you develop in the dark, and you accept the grain as part of the truth.

Process & Materials

Chemical ratios and reclaimed cloth

Fine-tuning fiber paper toning requires patience and consistent water temperatures. A weak selenium bath yields subtle split tones in the highlights without sacrificing the deep charcoal shadows that anchor the print.

For the pamphlet bindings, sourcing unbleached linen thread and reclaimed book cloth from regional binders keeps the finished volumes grounded in actual textile history rather than modern synthetic board.
